PORTER COUNTY -- The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Porter County in Indiana that is effective until 8 p.m.
Moderate to heavy lake-effect snow showers will persist through this afternoon and into the early evening. 5-8 inches of snow is expected to fall by this evening.
Latest blog entry from ChicagoWeatherCenter: A narrow but intense “plume: (or “corridor”) of lake snow has developed over eastern Lake Michigan with the arrival of arctic air and has produced periods of white out conditions in the Valparaiso, Beverly Shores and Lincoln Hills areas of Porter County Indiana.
Surface winds converge beneath these plumes leading to a “pile-up” of air just above the ground which then ascends in an environment which features steeper than usual declines in temp with height. Air “warmed” by the lake ascends becomes buoyant compared to its warm surroundings then cools as it ascends, producing clouds and snow.
Here’s are mid-morning visible satellite images of the lake snow plume plus a link to a satellite animation from CIMSS (the Cooperative Institute for Meterological Satellite Studies) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison which will allow you to follow the east/west oscillations of the lake snow plume during the day.
