CHICAGO -- The White Sox's mascot South Paw was in Chicago's Loop this morning, trying to distract people from the cold by getting them to think about baseball season that's right around the corner.

With an arctic air mass in residence, fresh snow cover and northwest winds temperatures have dropped below zero in  many areas.

Temperatures are hovering near or just below zero in the city and close to the lakefront, but have dropped well below zero  with dangerous wind chills  well inland.
