Tom Skilling to receive 2018 ‘Broadcast Pioneer Award’

CHICAGO -- One of WGN's very own is going to receive a special honor.

The Illinois Broadcasters Association has selected Tom Skilling as the recipient of their 2018 broadcast pioneer award.

The annual award is given to broadcasters who have dedicated the majority of their careers in the state of Illinois.

Skilling started out in radio while still a freshman at West Aurora High School.

While doing stints in Madison and Milwaukee, he debuted on WGN-TV in August of 1978 where he's become one of the most respected meteorologists in the country.

Paul Rennie , president and general manager of WGN said, "Tom's career is truly legendary. I can think of no better way for the broadcast industry to honor him."

The award will be presented to Skilling in June.
