Beginning late Wednesday night into Thursday morning heavy rains and thunderstorm downpours are expected to dramatically increase the flood potential over the Chicago area with the possibility of a wintry mix of freezing rain/sleet/heavy snow in our northernmost counties.

The flood potential will be enhanced during the afternoon Thursday, as mild moisture-laden air with dew-points in the 40s spreads over the area.

Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds are possible in the afternoon – especially in southeastern sections of the Chicago area (see severe weather outlook map).

Strong northerly winds well in excess of 50 miles per hour are forecast to occur later Thursday night as the storm system pulls away to the north and east.
