According to Elias, Jeff Samardzija is the first pitcher since at least 1900 to give up three or fewer runs in each of his first eight starts and not earn at least one start. The Cubs are 1-7 in those games.

Anthony Rizzo bunted twice for base hits in St. Louis yesterday to beat the extreme shift Mike Matheny was employing. The first one came in the first inning with two out and nobody on base. Not a big fan of that play. I would rather see him try to drive the ball and get into scoring position or possibly knock the ball out of the ballpark. The second bunt came in the 4th with the Cubs down 4 and leading off the inning. Much better play. Needed base runners, why not take it? The move paid off as Castro went deep to cut the lead in half.

Speaking of Castro, he continues to impress. Batting .303 on the road trip with two long balls a pair of doubles, a triple and four bases on balls. He has hit the ball with much more authority to the pull side than last season and you can see the potential for more slugging. I still think  there is a chance he turns into a 25-HR guy.

Darwin Barney had a pretty good trip as well.Made four starts and went 6 for 16 for a .375 clip and may merit a little more playing time going forward if the bat can continue to contribute.

Mike Olt hit 4 HR’s on the trip and leads all MLB rookies with 8. On pace for better than 30, that would surpass the club record currently held by Billy Williams who hit 25 in his rookie of the year campaign in 1961.

Enjoy the snow.
