(MESA, Ariz.) -- Jason Hammel vividly remembers the day he learned he was moving from Chicago to Oakland.

"The phone call was on the 4th of July, I remember it like it was yesterday because my wife burst into tears. A pregnant wife moving across the country, that's tough," Hammel said.

The right hander was 8-5 with a 2.98 ERA in 17 starts for the Cubs, and his thought process was to pitch so well the Cubs couldn't trade him.

But Hammel's success helped the team land top prospect Addison Russell in a trade with Oakland that sent Hammel and Jeff Samardzija to the A's.

Hammel happily resigned with the Cubs this off-season and joins a revamped starting staff along with ace Jon Lester.
