CHICAGO — On Thursday night, Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose has issued a statement responding to allegations of sexual assault by an ex-girlfriend.

“I am just focusing on staying healthy and getting ready for the season,” Rose said. “I am not going to comment other than to say – I know the truth, and am confident I will be proven innocent.”

In a lawsuit filed Wednesday in Los Angeles, an unnamed Jane Doe claims Derrick Rose, and his friends, Randall Hampton and Ryan Allen, drugged her, then later broke into her home and gang raped her in August 2013.

“Jane has very little recollection of the events that followed given her incapacitated state of consciousness, with a recollection of only few second flashes at a time. However, Jane does recall brutal details of the rape,” said the complaint.

Rose’s attorney, Mark Baute, released this statement:

“The plaintiff’s allegations are completely false and without any factual basis. This is nothing more than a desperate attempt to shake down a highly respected and successful athlete. Mr. Rose was in a non-exclusive, consensual sexual relationship with the plaintiff for over two years. The plaintiff expressed no complaints about Mr. Rose until various lawyers began to surface and demand that the plaintiff be paid millions of dollars. This is the third lawyer the plaintiff has retained in this matter. Two years have passed since Mr. Rose ended the consensual relationship with the plaintiff, and her claims are as meritless now as they were two years ago.  We have complete confidence that the case will be dismissed and that Mr. Rose will be vindicated. This lawsuit is outrageous.”

The woman says she did not call police because she was embarrassed and ashamed. Her attorneys could not be reached for comment.

Rose is the second Chicago athlete facing a rape accusation in recent weeks. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department could not say if there was a criminal investigation into the alleged rape.

Police in New York are investigating a rape allegation against Blackhawks star Patrick Kane.

Sports legal analyst Exavier Pope says the cases are different and fans should wait for the facts.

“We have to wait for the legal process to play out before we rush to judgement,” Pope said. “Neither Patrick Kane or Derrick Rose have been charged with a crime.”

The Chicago Bulls released this statement:

“We just learned about this matter and do not know all the facts. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
