CHICAGO — An elderly woman was killed while crossing the street on Chicago’s far North Side Monday afternoon.

The 78-year-old woman was crossing Peterson at Central Park around 4:45 p.m. when a UPS driver made a right turn on red.

Witness Michael Weldler was just coming up to the intersection he says, when the woman began crossing the street.

“She was crossing with a green light on Peterson,” he said.  “The UPS driver was making a right turn.  They were both at fault. She shouldn’t have been crossing. He shouldn’t have been turning right on red without looking.”

The driver of the truck did not leave the scene. He was taken to the hospital.

UPS says it is cooperating with the investigation.
