CHICAGO – A woman is dead after the SUV she was driving crashed into a concrete barrier on I-94 at 47th St. Sunday morning, police said, causing the car to roll over and partially ejecting her.

According to Illinois State Police, a 52-year-old woman was driving her Chevrolet Trailblazer at a high rate of speed in the left express lane around 9:30 a.m. Sunday when she crossed into the center lane, striking a Cadillac in the process. Momentum from the crash caused the SUV to veer away and crash into the barrier, police said, and the woman was not wearing a seat belt when the car rolled over.

The driver and passenger in the Cadillac were both wearing seat belts and refused medical attention for minor injuries. The driver of the SUV was rushed to Stroger Hospital where she was declared dead.

Police closed southbound express lanes on the Dan Ryan starting at Cermak around 11:45 a.m. to clear the scene and investigate the crash.
