CHICAGO --Investigators say there were no working smoke detectors in a South Side apartment where a woman was found dead in a fire.
The fire broke out around 10:15 Tuesday night in a three-story building at 89th St. and Justine Ave.
Firefighters arrived and saw two people who told them their daughter was trapped in their apartment on the top floor.
Firefighters found the woman unresponsive in the living room.
The woman who died has been identified as 27-year-old Zakharriah Ford.
Fire officials say working smoke detectors could have saved the woman's life.
The victim's mother is hospitalized in critical condition, suffering from smoke inhalation.
The father was able to get out on his own.
He was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
