MCHENRY COUNTY — A woman with a rare form of tuberculosis visited family members in McHenry County last month before being diagnosed.
State health officials are monitoring the family and interviewing anyone who may have come in contact with the woman.
Her name has not been released but officials say she arrived in the United States from India in April and also traveled to Missouri and Tennessee.
She is now in stable condition at the National Institutes of Heath in Maryland.
She has an extensively drug-resistant form of tuberculosis, or XDR-TB, which is a relatively rare form of the disease that is resistant to at least four of the core anti-TB drugs, according to the World Health Organization.
TB is spread through the air.
It usually attacks the lungs but can also hit the kidneys, spine and brain. It can also be fatal.
