MATTESON – A 26-year-old Channahon woman is in critical condition after she exited a party bus, stepped into traffic, and was hit by a driver that fled the scene Friday evening.

Around 7:45 p.m. Friday, Angela Celmer was riding in a rented party bus to the Blink 182 concert in Tinley Park when the bus got caught in heavy traffic on Vollmer Rd. in Matteson. The driver let some of its occupants off so they could relieve themselves in a nearby field, according to police.

Police said once traffic started moving again the driver told everyone to get back on the bus, but before it could get moving again, Celmer exited onto the roadway and was struck by an approaching vehicle in the next lane.

The driver initially stopped but then fled the scene. An off-duty paramedic witnessed the accident and was able to give Celmer CPR, police said. She was rushed to Christ Hospital for treatment, but remains in critical condition.

Witnesses including relatives of Celmer who were on the bus were interviewed by police, and they are searching for a suspect.

Celmer’s friends have started a GoFundMe page to help her cover her medical expenses.
