Woman accused of hate crime in crowbar attack of 4-year-old

A woman in California being held without bond after police say she struck a 4-year-old girl with a crowbar.

Maria Garate, 20, is charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. According to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, evidence suggests that the girl and her family were targeted because they are Asian.

Authorities say that the girl and her father were shopping at a San Jose Walmart when Garate she struck the girl in the head with a crowbar. The girl was in a shopping cart at the time. When Garate tried to swing again, the father stepped in and took the blow.

Garate is being held without bail, and her next court date is May 23.
