CHICAGO — A 28-year-old woman reported she was sexually assaulted on the city’s North Side, according to Chicago police.
Police said a ride-share vehicle picked up the woman at Redmond’s Ale House, located at 3358 N. Sheffield Ave. in Lakeview Sunday night.
Bar staff ordered an Uber for the woman and made sure the she entered the correct vehicle.
The woman told police that after leaving the bar, she was sexually assaulted inside her Uber.
She was dropped off around 7:40 p.m., just four miles from the bar, in the Kilbourn Park neighborhood on the 3300 block of North Karlov Avenue. Officers told WGN she was recognized by someone on the block because she used to live there. The person called police and notified them about the alleged sexual assault.
Police said the woman was transported to Community First Medical Hospital where a Sexual Assault Forensic Exam, or rape kit, was performed. She is in good condition.
It’s unknown when or where the assault took place.
Uber issued a statement that said, “What’s been reported is horrible and something that no one should go through. We have been in contact with the Chicago Police Department and have removed the driver’s access to the app. We will fully cooperate and provide any information to police to support their investigation.”
Police said they are working with the woman to track down the Uber driver and determine where exactly the sexual assault occurred.
The case is under investigation. No one is in custody.
