CHICAGO — Chicago businessman and mayoral candidate Willie Wilson is demanding a retraction from the Chicago Sun-Times for its coverage of a speech he delivered in the River North neighborhood.

Speaking at a City Club of Chicago event, Wilson criticized Chicago’s African-American aldermen for not supporting his candidacy. And he said he accepts people of all races.

The Sun-Times says Wilson told his audience, “To the whiteys here, I’m letting you know, I ain’t prejudiced.”

Wilson insists, he said “whites,” not “whiteys,” and the Sun-Times reporter merely misunderstood his Louisiana accent. The paper is sticking by its story, and its web site even carried an audio clip of Wilson’s remark.
