ALSIP, Ill. -- At her gravesite in Burr Oak Cemetery, Barbara and her son Adam say their hearts are being broken all over again: Monica's grave is in disrepair. The ground has collapsed and Monica's headstone has nearly disappeared from sight.
Given the recent history of Burr Oak, they feel like they've been victimized again.
In 2009 the FBI and Cook County Sheriff's Department investigation revealed 1,500 bones of at least 29 people were sprawled across the grounds in a story that made national news. Subsequently three employees were convicted and sentenced in a scheme for removal and desecration of human remains, as well as removal of more than 10 gravestones and markers. A fourth still awaits trial.
The cemetery has been placed in trust and is under new management. So with that in mind Adam and his mother reached out to WGN-TV for help. This morning we went looking for answers.
In short order we were referred to the head groundskeeper, Michael Carter, who told us he doesn't understand why at the very least the grass cutters didn't report the problem with Monica's grave.
