University of Illinois alum going into space

A University of Illinois alum is heading into space.

Michael Hopkins is one of six astronauts reporting to the International Space Station next month.

He will leave from Russia, and spend nearly six months in space.

Hopkins will assist in research for more than 200 scientific experiments.

He is from Missouri and graduated from the University of Illinois with an aerospace engineering degree in 1991.

After Illinois, he got his master’s at Stanford University and served in the Air Force.
