Fans flock to United Center to honor Kobe Bryant

CHICAGO — The United Center has been lit in purple and gold since Sunday night to honor basketball legend Kobe Bryant after he was killed, along with eight others, in a helicopter crash in California.

The 41-year-old NBA legend died in a helicopter crash under foggy conditions in Calabasas. All nine people on board, including Bryant's 13-year-old daughter Gianna, were killed. The official cause of the crash has not been determined, but it's been reported that heavy fog was in the area at the time of the crash.

Sports fans in the Chicago area stopped for photos outside the United Center Monday and created a makeshift memorial for Bryant outside the arena.

The Bulls hosted the Spurs at Monday night. The teams honored Bryant with an 8-second violation and a subsequent 24-second violation to begin the game.

Forward Thaddeus Young wore a special pair of Kobe 4 purple Finals MVP sneakers.
