CHICAGO — The truck driver behind the wheel of a semi-trailer that crashed into vehicles on I-55 early Friday morning is facing charges today.  Mark Tipton, 52 of Crossville, Tennessee admitted he had fallen asleep before the crash and did not attempt to stop, according to Illinois State Police.  Five people were transported to local hospitals for treatment with non-life threatening injuries.  An additional nine people were treated on the scene for their injuries and released.

The Cook County State’s Attorney charged Tipton with a Class 4 Felony of Driving While Fatigued.  In addition to the felony charge, Tipton was charged with brake out of adjustment, automatic slack adjusters required, 14-hour rule violation, false report of duty status, and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

Tipton will appear in bond court on Sunday, June 21, 2015.
