POSEN, Ill. — A person was killed and a state trooper injured in a crash that shut down portions of I-57 Monday.

Citing preliminary reports, Illinois State Police said the trooper had just finished assisting an investigation of a separate fatal crash on I-57 and was traveling northbound around 2:30 a.m.

A vehicle in front of the trooper’s vehicle lost control and struck the patrol car. Both vehicles ran off the road and struck the left wall near 138th Street, state police said.

Police said it is unclear at this time what made the driver lose control of the car.

A man in that car was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

The trooper was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

All northbound lanes of I-57 remain closed at 147th Street as the investigation continues.
