CHICAGO — At Navy Pier, the eyes of so many focused onto the water, to the boats on parade.
The whistles, the waves from friends on the shore went to the crews onboard, ready for the big Race to Mackinac.
The race has been a tradition for 108 years The event takes boaters from Chicago to Mackinac Island, Michigan. The trip is 289 nautical miles, in sometimes perilous conditions.
A family of boaters now 3,000 crew members strong are now on an adventure to the north, to keep a tradition afloat.
