NWS confirm tornado in Coal City, 8 other reports investigated

COAL CITY, Ill. --There were 13 tornadoes reported across the United States Monday night.

Governor Rauner has now opened the State Emergency Operations Center in Springfield to help coordinate the response to the tornado outbreak in Illinois.

The National Weather Service will be looking in these areas today to confirm as many as eight tornado touchdowns in several areas west and south of Chicago.

The first one touched down in Harmon in Lee County, and another hit Sublette.

The storm then moved south and east towards Mendota,  Kankakee and Hersher.

So far, NWS has confirmed a tornado touch down in Coal City at 9:58 p.m Monday.

The tornadoes created heavy damage across a large area and knocked out power to tens of thousands of people.
