The largest candy makers in the world say the world is running out of chocolate.
Chocolate companies Mars, Inc. and Barry Callebaut say chocolate deficits have been happening more frequently, the Washington Post reports. That’s when farmers produce less cocoa than the world eats.
The deficit was 70,000 metric tons last year. Producers say that deficit can increase 14-fold in six years.
They blame the shortage on dry weather and a fungus hurting cocoa plants, and more chocolate is being eaten with no signs of slowing down.
