CHICAGO -- A 1-year-old girl is recovering after falling out of a third-story window in what one family member is calling a "terrible accident."

Even on a relatively mild summer day, it's not uncommon to see wide open windows propped up with fans to bring in the breeze.

But in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood, an open window brought a whirlwind of police activity.

Chicago police say a young child fell three stories and was injured.

Police detectives were interviewing neighbors in the 8000 block of South Phillips Avenue. Authorities taped off the driveway leading to the back of the building where it happened.

One investigator was measuring the distance of the girl's fall. A man who identified himself as the girl's uncle says adults were home at the time.

The girl was taken to the hospital in critical condition but has now been stabilized.

According to the National Safety Council, more than 3,300 children every year are injured seriously enough to go to the hospital from falling out of a window.
