Saturday is the last day to buy gifts for the Operation Santa program. The program gives people the chance to “play Santa” for kids in need during the holidays

So far, the Chicago Post Office has collected around 20,000  letters to Santa, written by kids. But only 1,700 letters have been answered, according to spokesman Mark Reynolds.

Officials are urging Chicago residents to come out today to the main post office to read one of those letters, and then send a Christmas gift to the author.

“Unfortunately, there are a lot of letters that just aren’t going to get responded to. Unless everybody in Chicago comes down to the main post office tomorrow and help someone’s holiday become a little brighter,” said Reynolds.

The post office at Harrison and Canal is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m Saturday.
