WILMINGTON, Ill. — Police are calling a fatal shooting at a church in Will County last night a “tragic accident.”

A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed at the residence inside the Christian Faith Center in Wilmington, by his cousin.

The Will County Sheriff says they were called to the scene on Water Street at around 11:30 last night.

The sheriff says the victim was staying overnight with his 17-year-old cousin, the church pastor’s son.

The 17-year-old has a valid firearms ID card.

“The 17-year-old had possession of the rifle and was heading towards the gymnasium area where the sound was coming from,” Sheriff Mike Kelley said. “The 15-year-old was in front of the 17-year-old at which time the 17-year-old tripped over an extension cord that was attached to an industrial fan. “

The gun accidentally discharged shooting his cousin just under his armpit.

Family members and police performed CPR until paramedics arrived. The boy was rushed to a hospital in Kankakee where he died.

The boy was questioned here at the Will County Sheriff’s office.  He was not charged and released to the custody of his parents.
