HAMMOND, Ind. — A 13 year-old girl killed in a car accident during a police chase is being remembered for her love of sports, especially soccer and basketball.

Julianna Chambers was on her way home Wednesday, when an SUV allegedly ran a red light while fleeing police, plowing into the car she was riding in.

Her 57 year-old grandmother was also badly hurt. Police took a man and woman into custody, and charges are pending against both suspects.

The chase began when an officer arrived on the scene as the woman allegedly tried to steal beer from a store, but the pair tried to flee the scene. Police say the officer had to hang onto the SUV’s door as it sped out from the parking lot.

Indiana State Police say East Chicago Police started pursuing the Durango, and Hammond Police joined in when the car entered their city, before the chase ended in the fatal crash.
