As more snow fell on the Chicago area Wednesday morning, several suburbs looked for ways to make their dwindling road salt supply last.

After more than 50 inches of snow this season, salt piles are getting low.

Elmhurst got a new delivery Tuesday, and crews need to make it last.

So now they’ll be laying down half salt and half sand.

This mixture of sand and salt is supposed to be as effective as salt alone.

The main difference is the mess that the sand will leave behind, as the salt dissolves away.
