Chicago Tribune staff report

The first of what are expected to be several thunderstorms to hit Chicagoland today landed in the west and southwest suburbs late Tuesday morning, pelting Joliet and its neighboring suburbs with hail and heavy rain to go with high winds and lightning.

There are early reports from the National Weather Service that hail a quarter-inch in diameter has hit Joliet and half-inch hail has hit in Channahon just southwest of Joliet. The storm is moving north at about 40 m.p.h., with west suburbs like Naperville and Wheaton in its path.

WGN-TV meteorologist Tom Skilling is forecasting thunderstorms for about 40 to 60 percent of the area Tuesday afternoon and evening, along with warmer temperatures in the 60s. More rain is expected Tuesday night and Wednesday.
