Illinois state lawmakers cleared the way for hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to begin in Illinois.

The rules were approved by the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules Thursday, allowing oil and gas drillers to start applying for permits.

Environmentalists are angry, because they say the decision was made behind closed doors. And, the rules aren’t expected to be made public until they are published next week.

Fracking is a drilling process that uses water, sand and chemicals to acquire oil and gas.
