Southwest cancels all flights; Midway travelers cope with delays

Travelers at Chicago’s Midway airport we weary by Friday afternoon – at least those that still remained in the airport.

Airlines at Midway have canceled more than 450 flights.  Southwest Airlines has suspended all flights for the day.

A fire Friday morning at an FAA facility in Aurora cause a ground stop at both Midway and O’Hare for several hours. A hanful of flights began to resume slowly late Friday afternoon

Aurora officials confirm that the fire was deliberately started by a male employee, and this was not an act of terrorism.

He was found in the basement suffering from apparent self-inflicted wounds. He was transported to an Aurora hospital

The air traffic control center guides planes after they take off it also ensures that arriving flights, and passing flights, stay far enough apart.

Other air traffic control facilities are taking over flight control operations.
