Pilot survives small plane crash in Wheeling

WHEELING, Ill. — The pilot of a small-engine plane survived a crash in the north suburbs.

The FAA said the aircraft was attempting to land at Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling around 9 p.m. Thursday, when it crashed into Dam Woods.

The plane, an Icon A5 light sport aircraft, is an amphibious plane that seats two people. The pilot was the only person aboard at the time of the crash.

The pilot may not have been authorized to fly at night. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
