MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — The most famous sheriff in America just made a change in his county’s jail uniforms.

Joe Arpaio is sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, which includes Phoenix.

As of Monday, the jail’s standard inmate uniform has an American flag on the chest; Arpaio says it’s about honoring America’s heritage.

Dan Saban, Arpaio’s primary challenger, claims the sheriff is trying to exploit the flag for political gain.

Sheriff Arpaio became prominent for his strong stance against illegal immigration, and for making his county jail in mates wear pink underwear to prevent its theft by released prisoners.
