Pedestrian fatally struck by Rock Island Metra train near Joliet

JOLIET, Ill. — Metra trains were halted between New Lenox and Joliet Wednesday evening after a train fatally struck a pedestrian.

Metra officials said four people were on the tracks when the Metra Rock Island train No. 419 came through around 7:15 p.m. and struck one of the four.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the pedestrian as 17-year-old Jacob Manka from Mokena. He was pronounced dead at 8:14 p.m. Wednesday in Joliet. An autopsy revealed Manka died of multiple injuries as a result of being struck by a train.

The people who were on the tracks were between 16 and 20 years old. It is unclear why they were on the tracks.

The incident is under investigation.
