CHICAGO — Chicago Public School students received nearly a billion dollars in scholarship offers, breaking the district record for a single year.
The mayor and CEO of CPS made the announcement today at Juarez High School as students were awarded college scholarships.
The class of 2016 has received $950 million in scholarship offers.
The number represents a 21% increase from last year – and double the number of scholarship offers from two years ago.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chief Education Officer Janice Jackson say the improvement is a result of both hard work by the students and a dedicated effort by counselors, coaches and teachers to seek out scholarship opportunities and strategies.
Graduation rates are up from recent years, too.
Last year nearly 70 percent of CPS students finished high school.
