CHICAGO – It’s Mother’s Day and thousands of moms are kicking it off this morning in Grant Park for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

The race starts at Butler Field in Grant Park at 8:00 a.m.

Last year, more than 10,000 people participated in the race along Chicago’s lakefront.

This is the 18th year of the event.  It was moved to Mother’s Day in 2013, in support of breast cancer patients, survivors and their families.

Money raised will help fund research in the ongoing battle against breast cancer.

This is a big event for the Komen Foundation, after it cancelled it’s 3-day walk here in Chicago last year due to low participation.

Last year, the Chicago branch of the Susan G. Komen Foundation awarded $1.3 million to 17 local organizations.

This year, they’re hoping for at least another $1 million.
