CHICAGO — CPD officers shot and killed a man after police say he shot his pregnant girlfriend before firing at police late Sunday night. It was the fourth fatal police shooting in the past ten days. The woman is in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, and authorities say the bullet killed her unborn child.

The man shot by police was 36-year-old Richard Grimes, according to his sister Nicloe Brady.

“They used to argue a lot, but I’m not really sure. Probably she said something and it ticked him off, and he just had a nervous breakdown,” Brady said.

Police say in a statement officers responded to the 4600 block of West Adams Street at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday to a domestic violence call in the city’s West Garfield Park neighborhood, and grimes ran from the scene of the shooting. Nearly a dozen officers caught up him with a few blocks away. Police say he fired at officers two separate times before officers returned fire. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Chicago police Deputy Chief Al Nagode told reporters at the scene that two officers were injured, one with a graze wound to the head. The other officer injured his leg and had chest pains. During the investigation, police say a 24-year-old pregnant woman was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was taken to hospital, where she is still fighting for her life.

Brady says she believes what police say happened. Police did recover a semi-automatic handgun from the scene. The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the incident. Police say the officer or officers involved will be on routine administrative duties for 30 days.

After several high-profile cases alleging excessive force and civil rights violations by officers, the Chicago Police Department remains under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice. The Garfiled Park incident is the fourth fatal police shooting in a span of nine days, the first was on Nov. 18 in West Englewood. Officers say that suspect shot another person.

Then on last Wednesday in Englewood; 19-year-old Kajuan Raye was shot and killed officers say he pointed a gun at them, no weapon was ever recovered.
And, last Thursday police killed a man in Homan Square. Officers say he shot two others.
