WILLOWBROOK, Ill. — Around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, residents on the second floor of an apartment building in unincorporated Willowbrook got quite the scare.

“I looked up and seen the sky. My brother was in the shower. I told him the roof was missing. He said, ‘Are you kidding me?’” said apartment tenant Niquan Candler.

The roof suffered extensive damage. Tenants say part of it collapsed into their units. The building is now unstable and they can’t go back inside.

“They won’t let anybody in to get their things. My cat’s in there so I can’t get my cat -it’s just crazy right now,” said Brigette Stanbach.

In Oak Park, high winds brought down multiple trees, blocking streets, and some fell into homes.

“I went into my office up there and it just got really windy and I saw the tree get blown right over I couldn’t believe I was actually watching it,” said Oak Park resident Jason Kallen.

In nearby Forest Park at the Ultra Foods, winds ripped portions of the building’s air conditioning system from the roof, smashing into a car in the parking lot, breaking the front passenger side window and crushing the windshield.

Pieces of the metal piled up in front of the store; the wind also took down large green awnings off the building, and a satellite dish.

From above, crews surveyed the damage from the roof. The store had to close because of a gas leak. Fire crews came and turned off gas to the building.

Back in Willowbrook, we’re told there are 32 units in the building. All of those folks will have to find a place to stay until this roof can be repaired. Building managers have told tenants they’re hoping they can come back in two to three days.

Luckily no one was hurt here. Residents still can’t believe what happened.

“They said it was a microburst. It’s crazy how it missed all the other buildings and hit that one,” Stanbach said. “There are a lot of displaced people right now. We’re trying to figure out where we’re gonna go.”
