Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in St. Peter’s Square Sunday morning to hear the newly elected pope celebrate his first Easter Sunday mass.

Easter is the most important day of the year for Christians, marking the day they believe Jesus Christ was resurrected, after dying on the cross.

Following the mass, Pope Francis formally brought Holy Week activities to an end by giving the “Urbi et Orbi” blessing — his second as pope.
