Illinois senator Mark Kirk's controversial comments about a Republican presidential contender have put him on the hot seat.

Kirk was at a senate appropriations committee hearing when he made an offhand remark in front of a live microphone about senator and presidential candidate Lindsay Graham's love life.

The comment quickly went viral once it was posted on the Huffington Post.

In a statement, Kirk's press secretary says "Senator Kirk was joking with his colleague and immediately apologized to anyone offended by his remark.”
