Some aides to Hillary Clinton are under fire, with calls for their resignation, after a 2011 email from a progressive think-tank mocked Catholics.

Released by WikiLeaks, the email was sent to Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta and communications director Jennifer Palmieri.

The email came from John Halpin, a senior fellow at The Center for American Progress.

Halpin wrote: “Many of the most powerful elements of the conservative movement are all Catholic. It’s an amazing bastardization of the faith. They must be attracted to the systematic thought and severely backwards gender relations, and must be totally unaware of Christian democracy.”

Podesta did not respond to the email chain, but Palmieri did saying: “I imagine they think it is the most socially acceptable politically conservative religion. Their rich friends wouldn’t understand if they became evangelicals.”

The Catholic group is calling for Palmieri’s resignation.
