A new scam targeting people nationwide, has affected several residents in Aurora.

According to the Chicago Sun-times, a scammer calls a victim, claiming to to work for the IRS.

They then tell the victim they owe money.  Police say the victims are often threatened.

The callers are then told to pay with a Green Dot Money prepaid card.

Once the prepaid card is purchased, the victim is told to read the card number over the phone.

The money is then transferred to another prepaid card.

According to the IRS website, the scam has victimized persons in almost every state. They also urge that if someone receives a call from anyone purporting to be with the IRS, they should call the agency at 800-829-1040 or the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.
