A man was shot and killed by Chicago police officers Sunday after reportedly firing shots at pedestrians in the area.

Chicago Police released a statement saying Ogden District tactical Officers were in the area of Independence Blvd and 13th St in the city’s Lawndale neighborhood when they saw a gunman firing shots at pedestrians and fleeing on a bicycle.

“The officers were pursuing the offender when he turned towards the officers and fired shots at them. Due to this action, the officers discharged their weapons and struck the offender,” the statement said.

Residents watched this evening as police searched the area for evidence, some officers had rifles in their hands.

“We heard a lot of gunshots, at least 6 gunshots and police were coming,” said witness Kendra Scott.  “As we walked over we saw the boy was laying there.  They handcuffed him after he was deceased.”

The gunman was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai hospital.

Police say a handgun was covered at the scene.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
