CHICAGO– Police say a sexual assault near the DePaul campus early Thursday morning may be linked to two others. Now they’re hoping the public will help them track down the suspect.
One of the victims is bravely telling her story, as police release a surveillance photo of the man they’re looking for.
Police describe the man they are trying to track down as possibly Hispanic with olive skin and short dark hair, 25 to 45 years old, 5-5 to 5-foot-9, weighing somewhere between 160 and 180 pounds. He’s seen here wearing a dark short-sleeved polo shirt with white horizontal stripes and jeans cuffed at the ankles.”
They think he attacked 25-year-old Kaie Raig the morning of August 9th.
Kaie spoke with WGN Thursday evening and said “he jumped out of nowhere from behind me. He covered my mouth, started sexually assaulting me– pushed me down when I screamed and then he started running.”
Kaie went to the hospital the next day and spent the whole day talking to doctors and police.
She’s believed to be the suspect’s first victim. Police think he struck again in Old Town August 15th just after midnight.
Then Thursday morning around 1:40 in the 900 block of West Belden.
“You still have to watch out, especially as a woman walking alone at night.”
Students at DePaul got a safety alert in their email Thursday morning. It’s alarming for everyone– especially those who heard the commotion near Belden and Sheffield Thursday morning.
“It’s definitely a little uncomfortable and unsettling.”
And for his victims, like Kaie, it’s absolutely horrifying. But bravely, Kaie, even as she recovers from the attack, is committed to making sure the word gets out and the suspect gets caught.
“I think that perpetrators like him don’t realize that there are some pretty strong people out there and that we’ll do everything in our power to make sure that others are safe.”
Kaie says her roommate bought her a canister of pepper-spray and she’s discovered a support system in Lincoln Park she never knew she had.
Police say they’re hopeful someone recognizes the man in that photo and gives them a call.
The Guardian Angels joined the search for the serial rapist on Friday morning. They passed out fliers with a picture of the suspect on Fullerton and Sheffield.
