CHICAGO — An off-duty police officer was involved in shooting on Chicago’s South Side Wednesday.

Police said the officer intervened in a possible burglary at a neighbor’s house in the 5100 block of South Ingleside Avenue in the city’s Hyde Park neighborhood.

“The CPD officer who was off duty at the time identified himself as a CPD officer placing himself on duty in order to take police action when he interrupted what we believe to be a burglary in progress,” Sergeant Rocco Alioto said.

The officer, who is 46-years-old and a 19 year veteran of the force, opened fire.

Police said they are not sure if the suspected burglar was hit or if he was armed. Police said they have checked with area hospitals and the man does not appear to have reported to any of them.

Officers did not recover a gun left behind the suspect.

Investigators believe he fled the scene in a van and they were searching for any surveillance video that could help in the investigation.

COPA is investigating the officer’s use of force.
