One man is dead and another is hospitalized in critical condition following a shooting at downtown office building where they both worked.

Police say there was a struggle for the weapon in a 17th floor office after a disgruntled Arrowstream employee Tony DeFrances, unhappy about a demotion, pulled a gun on the company CEO, 54-year-old Steven Lavoie. DeFrances allegedly shot Lavoie in in the head and stomach before he took his own life.

Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy says DeFrances was demoted Friday and he showed up Thursday morning at the Bank of America building on South LaSalle asking for a one-on-one meeting with his boss. DeFrances was Arrowstream’s Chief Technology Officer.

A struggle ensued and shots were fired.

With police and paramedics rushing to the scene building security put out a public address announcement telling office workers stay put.

Like countless Financial District offices, the Bank of America building has an electronic card key entry system but no metal detectors to screen out guns or other weapons.

McCarthy said there were about 10 witnesses in office at the time.
