CHICAGO — There are differing accounts about what led to the fatal police shooting of a man after a road rage incident in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood.

But they all involve a dispute between Joshua Beal, 25, and an off-duty Chicago firefighter.

The dispute occurred around 3 p.m. Saturday in the 11100 block of South Troy Street as Beal was leaving a funeral he served as pallbearer at.

An off-duty firefighter told the driver of a vehicle, in which Beal was riding, that he or she was illegally blocking a fire lane and causing delays.

Three people then exited the vehicle and began arguing with the firefighter.

An off-duty Chicago officer who was in a barbershop nearby, spotted the fight, approached the scene while identifying himself, and became involved in the brawl.

An off-duty sergeant, who was on his way to work when he saw the melee, got out of his vehicle and announced his office.

Authorities say Beal was holding a gun, which pictures and video support. Chicago police detectives have authenticated the video and photographs.

The sergeant then displayed his weapon and when Beal did not drop his, shots were fired — and he was hit multiple times.

Beal’s gun was recovered at the scene. Police are checking to see if it was fired.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says officers beefed up patrols in Mount Greenwood to prevent a fight between Black Lives Matter protesters and Blue Lives Matter activists on Sunday. He says the department will do the same Monday if protesters return.

Meantime, neighborhood schools Mount Greenwood Elementary and Keller Gifted Magnet School, alerted families that they would alter drop-off and recess arrangement for at least today. The decision was made following the weekend protests.
