HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. — A suspect has been arrested and charged with murder after a teen was killed in a shooting in Highland Park Sunday, according to police.

According to the Lake County Major Crime Task Force (LCMCTF), 16-year-old Highland Park resident Estiven Sarminento has been charged with two counts of first degree murder, and was the offender in the shooting of a 16-year-old from Highwood, who was earlier identified by the Lake County Coroner’s Office as Omar Diaz.

LCMCTF officials also said Sarminento will be tried as an adult.

Highland Park officers said the deadly shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. Sunday in the 2300 block of Green Bay Road.

After first responders arrived on scene, Diaz was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

According to police, the shooting appears to have been targeted and witnesses described the offender, later identified as Sarminento, as a man dressed in all black riding a bicycle.

Prior to the shooting, police said the victim was likely walking on the sidewalk when they were approached by the shooter. They then spoke briefly before the victim was shot.

According to information collected by the police during their investigation, Sarminento was an acquaintance of Diaz, and there was an ongoing dispute between the two before the shooting occurred.

Police say it was originally believed that the person responsible fled on a bicycle, however, officers now believe the offender fled the scene on foot.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force investigators and Highland Park Detectives say the investigation is ongoing.
