‘Person of interest’ turns himself in after fatal high-rise shooting

CHICAGO — Police are questioning a person of interest after he turned himself into police following the fatal shooting of a man in a gym at a residential high-rise building  on the city’s Near West Side.

The shooting happened at about 7:05 p.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of West Kinzie Street.

Darrin Joss, 45, was said to be on an elliptical machine when he was shot multiple times, including in the head.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead .

About eight and a half hours after the shooting, a man in a wheelchair turned himself in at police headquarters at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

Residents say Joss and the man in a wheelchair had been overheard arguing over a woman earlier that evening.

Charges have not been filed.
