MONTOURSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Police say a 2-year-old Pennsylvania boy found a handgun on a bed and shot himself in the leg while his mother and her fiancé were showering.

Investigators say the toddler took the .45-caliber gun from an upstairs bedroom at the boyfriend's Montoursville home Thursday and played with it on a downstairs couch as he watched cartoons.

Police say the bullet lodged in the boy's back. They say he was conscious and talking before surgery to repair damage to organs. According to WNEP, 2-year-old Zackary has already had one surgery and is expected to have a second.

WNEP obtained a Facebook photo from last June that shows Zackary with his mother, Mandi Fry, and her fiancé, Cody Asher. Fry is pregnant and the caption reads: “Watch out boys you better run. It’s a girl and Dad’s got guns!”

“It was a tragedy. It was terrible.  It was a hard lesson to be learned of what not to do. How you should handle a handgun and firearms in your house when you have small children,” Montoursville Police Chief Jeffrey Gyurina told WNEP.

The Montoursville police chief says charges against the couple are pending.
